THE ROLE OF ENGLISH AS A GLOBAL LINGUA FRANCA IN EDUCATION AND BUSINESS

This article explores the role of English as a global lingua franca (ELF) in education and business, highlighting its significance in facilitating international communication, knowledge exchange, and economic development. In an increasingly interconnected world, English serves as the primary medium for cross-cultural dialogue, academic research, corporate transactions, and global trade. Its widespread adoption has transformed educational systems, influencing curricula, teaching methodologies, and language policy worldwide. Students are increasingly required to acquire proficiency in English to access higher education, scholarly publications, and global academic networks. Similarly, in the business sector, English proficiency is often linked to employability, career advancement, and organizational competitiveness, particularly in multinational corporations.
The article examines how ELF functions as both a practical tool for communication and a cultural mediator, enabling interactions among speakers from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. It analyzes the challenges associated with the dominance of English, including linguistic imperialism, the marginalization of local languages, and inequities in access to English language education. At the same time, it explores the benefits of ELF, such as fostering international collaboration, promoting intercultural competence, and standardizing communication in global markets.
To investigate these dynamics, a mixed-method research design was employed, including literature review, survey analysis of students and professionals, and case studies of international educational and corporate contexts. Findings indicate that English as a global lingua franca enhances educational and professional opportunities, facilitates cross-border collaborations, and contributes to knowledge dissemination. However, successful integration requires balancing global communication needs with the preservation of linguistic diversity. The article concludes by providing recommendations for policymakers, educators, and business leaders to optimize the use of ELF while promoting equitable access and intercultural understanding.
