Abstract

Phonetic variation and language transfer are among the most influential factors affecting pronunciation accuracy in second and foreign language learning. This article examines the nature of phonetic variation and the transfer patterns that emerge when learners acquire English as a foreign language. The study focuses on how phonetic features of learners’ native languages influence the production of English segmental and suprasegmental features. Drawing on theories of phonetics, phonology, and second language acquisition, the paper analyzes common pronunciation patterns, including vowel and consonant substitution, stress misplacement, and intonation deviations. The article also discusses pedagogical implications, emphasizing the importance of phonetic awareness and targeted pronunciation instruction in English language teaching. The findings suggest that understanding phonetic transfer patterns can significantly improve pronunciation teaching strategies and contribute to more effective communicative competence development.
