The Impact of Smoking on Periodontal Tissue Health
Smoking is a major risk factor for periodontal diseases, significantly affecting the structure and function of periodontal tissues. Tobacco smoke introduces harmful chemicals that alter the immune response, reduce blood flow, and promote the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity. These effects lead to inflammation, destruction of connective tissue, and bone loss around the teeth, ultimately resulting in tooth mobility and loss. This review highlights the mechanisms by which smoking exacerbates periodontal disease progression and discusses the challenges faced in treatment outcomes for smokers. Understanding the detrimental impact of smoking on periodontal health is crucial for developing effective prevention and therapeutic strategies.
