Abstract

This article explores the historical journey of how the English language has adopted and adapted thousands of words from other languages across time. By tracing the major sources of borrowings—from Latin and French to modern global languages—it highlights the impact of cultural, political, and social contact on the development of English. The paper also examines the types of borrowings and how they have shaped English vocabulary, style, and identity. Ultimately, the article argues that borrowings are not just additions to the lexicon but reflections of English as a living, evolving language shaped by its interactions with the world.
