Abstract

Pre-teaching is a vital instructional strategy in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classrooms, designed to prepare learners for upcoming language tasks by introducing key vocabulary, structures, and context beforehand. This paper explores the role and effectiveness of pre-teaching in developing language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—among ESOL learners. Through a review of current methodologies and classroom practices, the study highlights how targeted pre-teaching can reduce cognitive load, enhance comprehension, and improve learner confidence and participation. Emphasis is placed on aligning pre-teaching strategies with task demands and learner needs, making the approach a practical and supportive step in skill-based instruction.
