HOW TO IMPROVE CULTURAL AWARENESS IN TEACHING ENGLISH TO SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Cultural awareness is a vital element in English language education, especially in secondary schools, where students are exposed to a wide range of cultural perspectives. This study explores the significance of incorporating cultural awareness into English language teaching to improve secondary school students' linguistic abilities and intercultural communication skills. The research investigates effective strategies for integrating cultural content into English lessons, with a focus on fostering students' global perspectives and enhancing their motivation to learn. By employing a mixed-methods approach, the study assesses the impact of cultural awareness on students' understanding of idiomatic expressions, cross-cultural communication, and engagement with the language. Results suggest that embedding cultural content in English teaching not only strengthens students’ language proficiency but also enhances their critical thinking, adaptability, and social awareness. This paper argues for the inclusion of cultural learning within the English language curriculum to promote global citizenship and prepare students for successful communication in a multicultural world.
